Dog-Friendly Black Mountain: Stays, Trails & Tables That Welcome Your Pup

- 7 min read

There's a difference between a town that allows dogs and a town that genuinely likes them.
Black Mountain is the second kind.
That matters because most pet-friendly travel comes with quiet compromises. Surprise pet fees. An unkempt patio with no view. The vacation home where you can tell, somehow, that your dog isn't really welcome. We skip all of that.
The good walks and the good tables and the good shops are the same places, and you and your dog can move between them at the same easy pace in Black Mountain. This guide is for the trip where your dog comes along as part of the plan, not a special accommodation.
We'll cover where to walk, where to eat and drink, the local pet shop everyone seems to end up in, and a few practical things worth knowing before you come.
First, the questions we hear most.
Common Questions We Hear About Visiting Black Mountain With a Dog

Is Black Mountain dog-friendly?
Genuinely, yes. Dogs are welcome on most patios downtown, on the Lake Tomahawk loop, inside several shops, and even inside the music venue many locals consider the heart of the town. You'll find water bowls outside storefronts and treats on counters.
This isn't a town that quietly puts up with dogs. It's a town that's glad you brought them.
Can I walk my dog around Lake Tomahawk?
Yes. The loop around the water is on-leash and one of the most beloved daily walks in town. You don’t even need to bring poop bags. There are dispensers around the lake. But expect to make a few canine friends on the way.
Is there an off-leash dog park in town?
Honestly, options are limited. Black Mountain has a small fenced dog area at Riverwalk Park on NC-9. It’s the only off-leash spot inside town limits, and like many of the area's green spaces, it was affected by Helene. We recommend confirming current status with us before you head over.
The rhythm of dog travel here is built around leashed walks rather than fenced parks, and most dogs settle into it quickly. Lake Tomahawk twice a day plus a stream-crossing trail in Montreat covers more ground than most off-leash sessions anyway.
Can dogs go on the Blue Ridge Parkway and nearby trails?
Almost universally, yes — leashed. The Parkway, Pisgah National Forest, and most state and Forest Service trails near Black Mountain welcome dogs. The one major regional exception is Great Smoky Mountains National Park, where dogs are only permitted on two short paths.
Closer to home, Montreat's wilderness trails and the Craggy Pinnacle trail off the Parkway are all favorites among local dog people.
What's the leash law for dogs in Black Mountain?
Buncombe County requires dogs to be leashed any time they're off your property. That applies in town, in parks, and on every trail in the area, even the ones that feel remote enough you might be tempted otherwise.
Can my dog come to restaurants and breweries?
The easier question is where they can't. Most patios downtown welcome well-behaved dogs, and several spots like The Grange, Lookout Brewing, Black Mountain Brewing, Pisgah Brewing, and Oak & Grist extend a real welcome at picnic tables and on the lawn. White Horse Black Mountain even allows well-behaved dogs inside during shows. We'll get into specific spots further down.

Where's the nearest vet and emergency vet?
For routine needs, Beacon Veterinary Hospital is right here in Black Mountain. In May of 2026, they celebrated their return to a permanent location in town, after spending 18 months in a temporary facility following the destruction of their original building during Hurricane Helene. Their address is: 3126 US HYWY 70, Black Mountain, 28711.
For 24/7 emergencies, MedVet Asheville is about twenty minutes away. It’s worth having them in your phone before you head out on a trail. Their phone number is: (828) 665-4399.
What should I expect for pet fees?
In this market, pet fees on independent stays generally range from about $25 to $150, depending on length of stay and number of dogs. Most of our stays have no pet fees. All of our pet-friendly homes are listed at the end of this guide, each with its own policy.
Where to Walk Your Dog Near Black Mountain

The Lake Tomahawk Loop
If you're staying near downtown, this is where your day starts. The just-over-half-mile loop is mostly flat, fully on-leash, and one of the most reliably social walks in town. Coffee-hour quiet in the morning, dogs greeting dogs by late afternoon.
Most locals do two laps. There's a section on the far side where the trees open and the Seven Sisters line up in full view, a small ridgeline pause worth slowing down for.

Where to Spoil Your Dog: Pet-Friendly Stores in Black Mountain

There's a handful of shops in town that genuinely welcome dogs through the door. Water bowls inside, treats by the counter, regulars who know each dog by name.
The anchor in Black Mountain is Bone-A-Fide Pet Boutique on Cherry Street, locally owned and quietly running since 2003. Their bakery turns out fresh dog treats in seven rotating flavors — peanut butter, sweet potato, parmesan herb, and more — all made with food-grade ingredients and no salt or sugar. Furry locals stop in for the bakery alone.
A few other dog-friendly stops worth knowing about while you're downtown:

C.W. Moose Trading Co.

Before You Come to Black Mountain with Your Dog

A few things worth knowing before you load the car. You don't need much beyond what you'd normally bring, but a few specifics make exploring with your dog easier here.
A six-foot leash is required on the Blue Ridge Parkway and useful everywhere else.
A collapsible water bowl. Many patios put water out, but trails don't.
Microspikes if you're hiking in winter. Shaded mountain trails can hold ice well after the roads have cleared.
Something familiar from home. A blanket, a favorite toy, the kind of small comfort that makes a new house feel less new.
A special note on weather: Black Mountain summers can heat sidewalks fast on a sunny afternoon, so early morning and evening walks save paws. In winter, ice can linger a day or two on shaded trails and driveways after a storm.
